Reminder: Underwriting Medical Supplement Plan J Applications to begin May 1
Last month we told you that Asuris Medicare supplement Plan J applications with a policy effective date of May 1, 2008, or later will be subject to medical underwriting.
Although current Plan J members are not impacted by this change, they will receive a letter and contract rider the first week of April.
Plan J is our most robust Medicare supplement benefit design. It's competitively priced, making it one of the most preferred plans in Washington for those wanting a rich benefit plan at a very attractive price point.
Plan J does not require underwriting if the applicant is:
- In his or her initial six-month enrollment period
- Coming from another carrier's Medigap Plan J
For those prospective members who would rather not complete a health statement, Plan F is a comparable benefit design that is not subject to medical underwriting. Either way, we have comprehensive plan designs from which to choose. Prospective members who apply for Plan J and are declined based on the health statement can enroll in Plan F with no underwriting.
In addition, for those transferring from an Asuris TruAdvantageTM plan or from another carrier’s Medicare Advantage plan to Asuris Medicare supplement Plan J, the applicant will be subject to underwriting. There are only two exceptions to this rule:
- If the applicant is a current Asuris member, was an Asuris Medicare supplement Plan J enrollee, transferred to an Asuris TruAdvantage plan, and wanted to return to his or her original Asuris Medicare supplement Plan J under the two-year return assurance policy
- The applicant's current Medicare Advantage plan is exiting the market, triggering a Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
