| Topic: Diabetes |
Date of Origin: April 1998 |
| Revised/Effective Date: June
2009 |
Next Review Date: June
2010 |
Recommendation Summary:
Asuris supports the 2009 recommendations from
the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for the
treatment and care of members with diabetes. Also,
Asuris participated in the development of the
Oregon Population-Based Guidelines for Diabetes
Care. This set of guidelines augment the
guidelines from the ADA. These recommendations
do not include all the care a person with diabetes
may need. However, they identify procedures
that can help prevent diabetes complications.

Position Statement:
The ADA guidelines
are supported by Asuris because they are based
on scientific evidence, and where evidence is
lacking, on panel consensus judgment. The
report reflects the current standard of care.
- The panel members are recognized experts
practicing in a variety of professional settings.
- The guidelines clearly state the strength
of the evidence for which recommendations are
based.
- Methods used to search for and select appropriate
scientific literature are not readily apparent.
- The methods used to critically appraise the
evidence supporting guideline recommendations
are not transparent.
- Financial disclosures/potential conflicts
of interest for panel members are included
in the evidence report, although sources of
funding for the guidelines are not disclosed.

Guideline Adoption and Recommended
Use:

recognized sources. This guideline is based
on the most recent medical evidence or a consensus
on clinical treatment patterns by physicians
in the selected field of practice. Asuris
adopts guidelines to help practitioners and members
make decisions about appropriate health care
for specific conditions. Guidelines are
not a substitute for professional medical advice.
Benefit Determination:
Benefit determinations should be based in all
cases on the applicable contract coverage. To
the extent that there are any conflicts between
these guidelines and the contract language, the
contract language will control.
