Tools help address employee burnout

May 31, 2022

Nearly everyone has experienced symptoms of mental burnout. Burnout from chronic workplace and life stress has become so pervasive, the World Health Organization (WHO) added it as an occupational phenomenon to its International Classification of Diseases in 2019. Naming chronic workplace stress as the main cause of burnout, the WHO began developing new evidence-based guidelines on mental well-being in the workplace.

All that happened in 2019, before the pandemic. Since then, burnout rates have soared.

Know the symptoms

For many workers, the boundaries between work and personal life have blurred to the point that workplace and life stress are nearly indistinguishable. That’s why it’s important for employers to recognize burnout’s signs and symptoms wherever their employees are and know where to guide them for help.

Burnout syndrome is a combination of energy depletion or exhaustion, negativity or cynicism toward one’s job, and reduced productivity. Although the symptoms of burnout often surface in other areas, its impact on job performance is what makes it an occupational phenomenon.

Recognizing the symptoms of burnout and demonstrating empathy toward employees experiencing it—whether they’re working on site, at home, or hybrid—are important steps toward managing its impact. Make sure your groups are aware of the solutions designed specifically to help combat burnout that are included in their plan, so they can guide their employees to get the help they need.
