Nearly one in five American adults will have a diagnosable behavioral health condition in any given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Given that PCPs are often the first to see signs of behavioral health issues in their patients as they emerge, it is important to be attentive and proactive.
Because some patients may not schedule routine wellness exams, we recommend that PCPs include behavioral health screening during non-preventive encounters. This approach ensures potential issues are identified early, even if patients aren’t coming in for regular check-ups.
We reimburse PCPs for behavioral health screening and strongly encourage them to screen patients for behavioral health conditions. This support underscores our commitment to comprehensive patient care and the importance of early detection and intervention.
